In early June eight bombs went off in eight cities around the US. They were mostly mailed to important leaders or tycoons of the country and one was even sent to a church. In September a bomb of about 100 pounds of dynamite and 500 pounds of cast iron went off in New York City.This bombing killed 38 people and injured 500. This situation is similar to the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, although that was on a much bigger scale. After both of these attacks the government created a new agency to protect the country. In 1919 it was the General Intelligence division lead by the future leader of the FBI Herbert Hoover. In 2002 the government set up the Department of Homeland Security.
